IELTS Task 2 Sample Answer 20 - In many countries in the world, some people earn extremely high salaries. Some people think that this is good for a country. Others think that the government should not allow salaries above a certain level. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Salary is one of the significant factors for ensuring the supply of necessities in one’s life.  There is an opinion by a few that payment of exorbitant remuneration is beneficial for a nation, whereas some others opine that it is better to have a ceiling limit set by the government for the same. I believe that setting a certain limit for salary would be illogical.

On the one hand, some people think that a nation would benefit from paying high salaries as it helps to retain the expertise within the nation. Expertise in various fields is required for the development of a nation’s economy. Most of the highly skilled professionals migrate to other countries because of the inadequate salary provided in their home country. Thus by paying high salaries, a country would be able to retain its skilled manpower within the country which is essential for a nation’s progress. An increase in the rate of emigration of employees from India to western nations is due to the inadequate salary payment in India.

On the other hand, it is thought by a few that the government should limit the amount of salary paid to a certain level with the intention of bringing equality in the distribution of a nation’s wealth. Equal distribution of wealth is one of the key factors to ensure harmony in the society. Setting a limit for remuneration would help to eliminate unfair dominance of the rich who earn high salaries over the poor and would also aid to uplift the living standards of people by increasing their purchasing power.

To conclude, I believe that intensity and risk associated with the work should act as key determinants for fixing the remuneration and thus jobs requiring intense mental labor and risk should be rewarded with a high salary.
